The same children’s story but with a new, updated gory twist, staring Gemma Arterton and Jeremy Renner.

This version is an action packed gory fest from start to finish, in this new telling of the classic children’s story of Hansel & Gretel. Where two children are lead into the deep dark forest by their father and stumble upon a cottage made from candy. Here, they meet an evil witch committed to fattening them up and eating them, however they end up fending the witch off and frying her body and eventually escaping.

This 2013, re-imaging goes beyond this, it tells the story of what happened after. Now adults, Hansel and Gretel are witch hunters, hunting and killing each witch they find across the forest, making sure they suffer for their crimes of kidnapping and eating children.

This movie, is sure to excite action lovers, with it’s CGI and fight scenes, however, I feel that this film has too much action and gore, so towards the end, you are slightly bored of it (if that is ever possible?).

It is a good film though, it keeps your eyes glued to the screen, and smile with excitement as they slash, shoot and rip apart the ghastly looking witches.

Though slightly predicable, it makes up for it with its use of 3D, making sure that each chase and kill scene is aimed straight at the viewer.

This new insertion into the franchise is a hit or miss for horror fans. I decided to watch this version, because not only do I love the original (1974) and the story behind Tobe Hooper’s classic. But, I loved the idea that this film was a sequel to the cult classic, unlike the others.

What I liked about this movie, is that it used footage from the original at the start of movie to get the story line rolling. Aside from the start and the end, it is the same general story that the others held.

They go to a house in Texas, explore the house, and one by one are killed by a man in a human skin mask wielding a chainsaw.

This film however, doesn’t reference the name Leatherface like the others, but by his name Jed. A simple man, with the mentality of an 8 year old (minus the chainsaw).

The ending, is what I enjoyed most, obviously we know from the start that the main character is a Sawyer, but what I didn’t expect (but I’m glad it did) was that she ended up helping Leatherface and in the end staying in the Sawyer house and caring for him.

As the saying goes, nothing is thicker than blood.

I do hope though, that another film will not be made in the future, because the 2006 prequel to the 2003 remake killed the franchise, and probably a reason why this film didn’t do as well as it should of at Box Office.

This, like many franchises (Scream, Saw, Friday 13th) should be laid to rest.

It grossed a mere $39million from its $20million budget.

The DVD is released in 2D and 3D around 27th May.
